Diwali festival is one of the most entertaining and favorable times of the year but for our dogs, Diwali always feels like horror.
If you already own a dog, then you understand how bad things get when those firecrackers begin to burst outside. It is hard to keep your dog calm during this time and the pollution makes things more threatening!
Although, there have been examples where dogs are habituated to firecracker noise and don’t panic much during this Diwali season.
But if your happy-go-lucky dog starts to tremble, bark more during Diwali, then it is an obvious sign that your dog is scared of fireworks. It’s crucial to make them feel relaxed during this time of the year.
Here are some tips that can assist you to take care of your pet dog:
- Take your dog out for a walk and get him/her to do a bunch of activities, 2-3 hours before the Diwali festivals. Don’t ignore feeding them well after the practice. An exhausted and well-fed dog will be less nervous during the fireworks.
- Make sure to get your dog inside your home before the fireworks start, as loud noise from the bursting crackers can threaten them and make them terror. Some dogs might act aggressively due to fear, while some may try to hide them in a silent secret corner of the home. If they are trying to isolate themselves by hiding under the bed or in the washroom, let them. Don’t push them to come out or try to calm them during this state.
- Shut down all the doorways and windows and turn up the volume of your music system or television to hide the sound of firecrackers.
- In case your dogs get violent then try to divert them from the noise of firecrackers by presenting them their favorite treat.
- Try to hold your dogs in a space where external noise interference is low. You may try covering the space below the doors with a cloth to minimize the sound of firecrackers from coming in.
- Divert your dog by giving access to all of your favorite toys. Let them have a private corner in the home to play with toys.
- Do not firecrackers and light candles around your dogs. Keep all fire-related things out of their reach.
- Make sure that your dog is wearing a tag with his name and your number so that in case your pet dog runs away in a panic or gets mislaid, you’ll be capable to find them easily.
- Lastly, spend time with your dog during Diwali festivities and keep them concentrated on you all the time.
