Shanti Suffering From Leg Injury

In Dharamshala the Shiva Association team came across Shanti, a dog with a deep wound near her leg, the tissue torn and exposed close to the joint. The injury looked serious, likely from a fall, a hit, or getting caught in something sharp while moving around unfamiliar terrain, something that happens all too often for strays who spend their days navigating rough streets and open areas without anyone watching out for them.

How She Was Found and Helped

The team noticed Shanti holding her leg awkwardly, clearly unable to move it normally, with the wound visible and raw near the joint area. On closer inspection they realized the injury needed immediate medical attention, the tissue was exposed and required proper cleaning before any real treatment could begin. She stayed remarkably calm through it all, watching quietly with soft, trusting eyes as the team worked carefully around the sensitive area. An IV line was set up to support her through the treatment, helping manage pain and keep her stable while they worked. The wound was gently cleaned to clear away any dirt and prevent infection, then carefully bandaged and wrapped to protect it while healing began. Shanti was given medicine to control pain and fight off infection, and once treated, she was moved to a calm, safe space where the team could continue monitoring her leg and changing her bandage as needed over the coming days.

Why This Kind of Injury Is More Dangerous Than It Looks

A wound this close to the joint needs extra care because of how sensitive the area is:

  • Joint injuries can affect long-term mobility if not treated and healed properly
  • Exposed tissue near a joint is at higher risk of serious infection if not cleaned thoroughly
  • Continued movement on an injured joint can worsen the damage significantly
  • The area requires careful, consistent bandaging since joints are constantly in motion
  • Left untreated, an injury like this can lead to permanent difficulty walking

Because joints allow so much of an animal's daily movement, wounds here need both immediate treatment and patient, ongoing care to heal correctly.

How We Can Stop This From Happening Again

  • If you notice a dog holding a leg unusually or avoiding movement near a joint, seek help quickly rather than waiting
  • Keep an eye on strays in areas with sharp debris, broken glass, or unstable structures where injuries are more likely
  • Avoid trying to treat a joint injury at home, professional care is essential to prevent long-term damage
  • Report dogs showing visible wounds near sensitive areas like joints as soon as they're spotted
  • Regular bandage changes and follow-up care are just as important as the initial treatment for injuries like this
